Will Universal Credit affect you?

Universal Credit will affect you if you are claiming one of the following 6 benefits, or if you might need to claim them in future: 

• Income-based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) 
• Income-based Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) 
• Income Support 
• Housing Benefit 
• Child Tax Credits Working Tax Credits 

Universal Credit rolls all these benefits into one working age benefit, paid monthly. 

There are two ways you could be moved over to Universal Credit: 

1. If you need to start or stop claiming one of these benefits. 
2. From November 2020, the DWP will start moving people from their current benefits over to Universal Credit. This is called ‘managed migration’. When it is your turn, the DWP will send you a ‘migration notice’. This will give you a deadline day to make a claim for Universal Credit and will be the day that your existing benefits will end. The deadline day must be at least 3 months from the date of your migration notice. 

Unless you have received a migration notice, you do not have to claim Universal Credit. However, some people might be better off replacing their current benefits with Universal Credit now.
