    Housing conference focuses on the importance of listening to tenants

    The first Independent East conference was held near Norwich in November 2022. More than 100 tenants, board members and staff attended from five housing associations based in Norfolk and Suffolk. The conference focused on what lies in store for social housing in 2023 and the important role of tenants.

    There were keynote speeches from housing experts Hilary Burkitt, Director of Housing at IFF Research; Kathryn Eyre, Quality, Engagement & Development Director of the Housing Ombudsman; and Kate Dodsworth, Director of Consumer Regulation for the Regulator of Social Housing. The programme also included table discussions and opportunities for questions.

    Creative collaboration

    In their discussions, the participants focused on creative collaboration as a key solution to the challenges faced by housing associations. They discussed how these challenges might be alleviated by really listening to tenants and putting them at the heart of decisions in the difficult year(s) ahead.

    I found the keynote speeches informative, positive and thought-provoking. The whole conference was uplifting and well attended by tenants. It shows a growing interest in how attitudes to social housing and engaging with our landlords are changing.

    It’s important for the sector to come together and think deeply about the challenges they are facing at the moment in such unprecedented times. The takeaway from today is a real sense that everyone is up for the challenge that we’re facing. Despite the great difficulties for housing associations, for tenants, everyone is up for thinking about how they are going to address these challenges and to make sure we are doing our very best for all of our tenants.

    The event was organised by Independent East, an informal alliance of five community‐focused housing associations in the East of England – Broadland Housing, Freebridge Community Housing, Havebury Housing Partnership, Saffron Housing Trust, and Orwell Housing Association.

    Independent East will continue to work collaboratively together and with tenants to address common issues, sharing ideas and best practice to continually improve services and better the lives of their customers.

    Martin Miller, 1926-2022

    Broadland’s staff and Board are very sad to hear of the passing of Martin Miller.

    Martin first came to Broadland in 1968 as its first Chief Executive. Martin played an instrumental role in Broadland’s evolution, its mission and vision, which are still part of our DNA today. Back in the early 1970s, when he was then working with architects, Edward Skipper & Associates, Martin realised the way social housing provision in the UK was changing. Instead of councils supplying most social housing, their role and the funding for new housing was instead being transferred to housing associations.

    Martin seized that opportunity by establishing Broadland Housing Association and he worked at Broadland for 23 years, bringing to fruition some of our most popular housing schemes. 

    Martin oversaw some of the most important changes in our history, from introducing tenant board members onto our Board to building some of our larger housing schemes. He also takes the credit for buying The Cedars, which became a sheltered housing scheme in Norwich. It is still one of our most popular schemes, and Martin even came back in 2006 to help us celebrate its 25th anniversary. 

    After Martin stepped down from his role as a Chief Executive, he continued to support Broadland as a member. Up until the pandemic he attended the AGM every year, lending us once again his vast experience and knowledge at one of our most important meetings of the year. 

    Michael Newey, the current Chief Executive of Broadland commented:  

    Martin’s contribution to the people of Norfolk and to Broadland Housing was massive. As our first Chief Executive, he helped grow Broadland from one scheme in Norwich to over 1,700 affordable rented homes across the county. Martin knew that a home is the foundation of everything else in life and he ensured that Broadland stretched itself to deliver new homes that communities needed. Personally I will miss Martin – his encouragement and his support. His family can be very proud of his contribution to this county and to lives of so many people over the years.

    Prior to founding Broadland Housing Association, Martin, who was born in Norwich, spent the first 22 years of his career in the Norwich shoe trade with Norvic Shoe Company, eventually becoming a Board member and heading the design team for both ladies and children’s shoes.

    In 1951, Martin married Barbara Barker and in September 2021 they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. A devoted family man, Martin was father to three daughters – Charlotte, Louise and Alexandra, and a very popular “Dumper” to eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

    At the age of eight, Martin went to Westminster Cathedral Choir School as a boy chorister, which instilled in Martin a life-long love of music. He put this to good use as a very reliable tenor, singing for many years into his 90s with the Norwich Philharmonic Society Choir. Martin’s other great passion was for sailing. Aged 17, when called up for National Service, Martin applied to join the Royal Navy. However, much to his disappointment, Martin was conscripted down the mines for four years as a ‘Bevan Boy’, near Leeds in Yorkshire. Happily, from the 1960s until his mid-80s, Martin was able to resume his passion for boats and he regularly enjoyed dinghy sailing at Blakeney and on The Broads.

    Martin Miller’s funeral will be at St Peter Mancroft at 11.00 on Friday 2nd September. All welcome. Please wear a dash of colour. Family flowers only.     Sponsored walk raises funds to end homelessness

    The Executive Teams of Independent East took part in a sponsored charity walk from Dunwich to Walberswick in Suffolk last week. They were walking to support Homeful, the social housing campaign to end homelessness. There is still time to contribute to the campaign.

    Michael Newey, Chief Executive, said:

    The walk is for a brilliant cause and we’re really pleased to support CIH President Jo Richardson’s campaign to help end homelessness. Although we work separately as Independent East colleagues, we share a similar vision and values. We want a fairer society and an end to youth homelessness, and so this cause is close to our hearts.

    Independent East is an informal alliance of five community‐focused housing associations in the East of England. The group’s purpose is to share ideas and best practice to continually improve services and better the lives of their tenants.

    Broadland celebrates Sustainable Housing Label success

    Broadland Housing has received a Sustainable Housing Label from international consultants Ritterwald. We are the first medium-sized housing association to receive the award, which recognises our strong ESG (environmental, social and governance) performance.

    The Sustainable Housing Label looks at more than 40 ESG criteria that are aligned to the Sustainability Reporting Standard for Social Housing, and scrutinises sustainability across the operations of an organisation.

    Broadland scored highly on tenant engagement, “ethical” considerations, and “high-quality sustainable housing, staff and tenant wellbeing and tenant representation”.

    High score for tenant engagement

    Iain Grieve, Executive Finance Director, said:

    There were some really positive things from the label application process around how we engage with our tenants, and around the communities and the surroundings of our development schemes, how we obtain feedback from our staff, and how we focus on staff wellbeing.

    There’s a lot of focus on the environmental side and net zero decarbonisation, but actually it’s the wider view of ESG and sustainability that funders are interested in.

    Ritterwald said that Broadland can “lead the way for other medium-sized social landlords looking to obtain an externally verified ESG accreditation”:

    …A sustainability strategy has to have a strong element of engagement with residents, and Broadland was able to demonstrate it.

    Benefits for the whole housing sector

    Iain said the Sustainable Housing Label has knock-on effects for the whole sector if more housing associations apply:

    There’s no need to be intimidated by something like an ESG accreditation, despite the fact that most of the holders are larger housing associations with more resources.

    What we found is that, going through the process, it looks at our operation and the things we would do on a day-to-day basis anyway. It’s allowed us to benchmark our performance against other housing associations, which has been another benefit.

    Ultimately, we’re all trying to achieve the same thing. It’s a really good thing to do, I think, to help us move forward together as a sector.
