    Board and leadership

    Kate Slack

    August 13, 2018

Kate Slack, MA, joined the Board of Broadland Housing in 2011, initially as a tenant Board member, before being appointed as an independent Board member in 2012. Kate is working towards a PhD in Politics at the University of East Anglia, where she specialises in women, motherhood, and their relationship to the state.

During her time on the Board, Kate chaired the Funding panel (2012-2013) and the Asset Management and Maintenance panel. She was a member of the Housing Management panel. Kate has a particular interest in environmental issues and sustainable development in housing.

Why did Kate first apply to join the board?

I wanted to get involved with the organisation that helped transform my life. With my Broadland house I was secure and could bring up my little boy and go back to university. That house in Norwich kick-started a lot of positive things for me, and I was interested in giving a bit back to the community where I thought I could get involved in positive change.

I also wanted to challenge the stigma that some people hold about social housing and the diverse people who need social landlords in the UK.

I really enjoy meeting staff from across the organisation. Everyone I’ve ever met has been really engaged with their job, really interesting to talk to, generous with their time and happy to answer any questions I’ve had.

I also really like going out to visit Broadland properties, see how varied they are and meet the people that live in them. It gives me a grounded understanding in the scale of Norfolk and how vital social housing properties are to their tenants and the communities that they are in.

    Michael Newey

    August 13, 2018

Michael Newey, Chief Executive, Broadland Housing Association

Michael has been Broadland Housing Group’s Chief Executive since May 2003.  He is a Fellow of both the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Chartered Institute of Housing.

He has worked in the affordable housing sector since 1997, having previously worked for Flagship Housing Group and Anglia Housing Group. Previously Michael worked as a Chartered Surveyor in private practice in London, working for both Richard Ellis and Savills.

In 2013-14 he was the Global President of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.  Previously held positions within the RICS include Vice Chair of the Global Management Board and Chair of the Communications Board, Public Affairs Committee and the UK Residential Policy Panel.

Michael is a Professional Member of the RICS Standards and Regulation Board, which sets practice standards and regulates chartered surveyors worldwide.  Working with the Economic and Social Research Council, Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Michael chaired an initiative to establish the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence, which was launched in 2017, and now sits on its International Advisory Board.

He is a Visiting Fellow and Chair of the Real Estate and Land Management Advisory Board at the Royal Agricultural University.  He is also the Chair of the Surveying Professional Advisory Board at Portsmouth University, where he studied 30 years ago, and which awarded him with an Honorary Doctor of Science in 2015 for services to both housing and also real estate education.

Away from housing, Michael is the Chair of the Theatre Royal (Norwich) Trust, an educational charity running the 1300-seater art deco theatre in Norwich city centre, as well as the 300-seater Norwich Playhouse and an educational facility called Stage Two.

Michael Newey is person responsible for Broadland Housing being compliant with the Consumer Standards.

    Simon Hibberd

    August 13, 2018

Simon Hibberd was a GP in Norfolk for almost 30 years. During that time he championed collaborative working across health and social services, integrating his North Elmham GP practice team with the local acute trust and agencies.

In 2004, before they became widespread, Simon set up patient representation groups at his practice’s surgeries. In 2009, he set up Breckland Care at Home, a community interest company, to bridge the gap with primary care and support vulnerable local people. He remains a director. His GP practice leadership was recognised twice by the Royal College of General Practice with a Quality Practice Award (the highest possible accolade) in 2004 and 2012.

Simon has participated widely in NHS bodies involved in primary care commissioning, and until 2017 was Chair of Members of South Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group, comprising representatives of the 24 local practices.

Why did Simon apply to join the board?

I like being part of an organisation of committed, enthusiastic people, but most of all I like seeing how much getting a new home transforms people lives. The genuine good feeling is difficult to over-emphasise. I am part of something worthwhile.

    Chris Ewbank

    August 13, 2018

Chris Ewbank, MBA Insead, BA Hons, was co-opted to the Board in April 2017 and took up the position of Chair following the AGM in September 2017.

Chris is the Chief Financial Officer/Senior Bursar of St John’s College, Cambridge, responsible for the college’s £525 million endowment, human resources, strategic planning, governance, regulatory compliance and fundraising. Before joining St John’s in 2005, Chris was Chief Operating Officer of Rothschild’s Asian Investment banking in Hong Kong, having joined Rothschild in 2000. Previously, he was an investment banker for Schroders in London, Singapore and New York. Chris qualified as a solicitor in 1988 and holds an MBA from INSEAD.
