North Repps eco homes - architect image

    Northrepps

Our new development at Northrepps has been completed, comprising of 19 operationally net zero homes after an 18-month project.

The 19 new homes were designed by architects Ingleton Wood and built by Norwich-based contractor Smith of Honingham.

    Energy-Efficient Features

These new homes are designed to be highly energy-efficient, featuring insulated timber frames, triple-glazed windows, air source heat pumps, and mechanical ventilation systems with heat recovery. Solar panels on the roofs are expected to generate enough electricity to cover the average annual use of each home.

    The scheme comprises of:

    • 8 Affordable Rent
    • 2 Shared Ownership
    • 9 Open Market

    New Tenants in Northrepps

Our first tenants have recently moved into their new home!

You can read more about this in our latest news article Broadland Housing Unveils 19 Carbon Zero Homes in Northrepps.

    Salthouse

    October 24, 2022

    Salthouse

Work has completed on 5 new affordable homes for rent in Salthouse, prioritised for locals from the village and nearby areas.

Households in housing need with a local connection will get priority allocation. There will also be one house for sale. Proceeds from this sale will generate surplus funds to cover the costs of developing the scheme in the style of the village (which Government funding does not provide).

    Design

The homes are in a sympathetic design style of a converted farmyard, using extensive use of flint to blend into Salthouse’s Conservation area and timber framing.

    • 2 x 2-bedroom bungalows
    • 1 x 2-bedroom house
    • 2 x 3-bedroom houses

    Environmental

This new development is designed to be operationally carbon net zero. These homes will have air source heat pumps, treble glazed windows, enhanced insulation and air tightness, along with mechanical ventilation. Solar panels will provide renewable energy, and each home will have its own electric vehicle charging point.

Real Living Wage -“makes a real difference”

    October 17, 2022

Jesse Manning, Cleaning Coordinator, Broadland Housing Association, talking at the launch of Making Norwich a Living Wage City

Real Living Wage -“makes a real difference”

At the launch of the Making Norwich a Living Wage City campaign in October, Broadland employee Jesse Manning (below, left) spoke powerfully about the dramatic impact of the Real Living Wage on his life.

Jesse Manning, Broadland Housing employee, speaking at the launch of Making Norwich a Living Wage City
Michael Newey, Chief Executive of Broadland Housing,, speaking at the launch of Making Norwich a Living Wage City

I first started work for Broadland in 2018.  When I got the chance to work for Broadland full time, it was the first time I had ever received the Real Living Wage.

I was living in shared accommodation with a family with a small child.  It was hard having to share a bathroom and kitchen with them, as I was outside their family unit.  When I moved to other shared accommodation with single people, I encountered different issues.

Being paid the Real Living Wage by Broadland made a real difference to my life.  With the increase in wages I could actually start looking for a home of my own. My goal was to get my own flat and be more independent.

I was lucky to get a social rented flat. The Real Living Wage helped me secure this tenancy because I could afford the rent, but also it was also finally somewhere I could call home, where I could feel safe and secure.

Having a stable home and a stable relationship gave my life and mental health a real boost.  I will be forever grateful as this has really helped my life move on positively.

The cost-of-living crisis has really bought into focus the importance of employers giving employees the Real Living Wage.  Today, I am now able to afford to live in shared ownership property with my partner.  I would never have been able to do this without receiving the Real Living Wage.

As part of my role at Broadland, I am part of the team that reviews and award new contracts.  A requirement of each new contract is that the company must pay the Real Living Wage.  For me this so important, as it has made such a difference to my life. I like to think that it will help others in the same way as it has helped me.

I am proud that Broadland are a Living Wage Employer, but also for the fact that it makes sure that its contractors pay the Real Living Wage too.

Jesse Manning, Cleaning Coordinator, Broadland Housing

Making Norwich a Living Wage City

Broadland Housing has been a Living Wage Employer since 2015 and we are a proud member of the Norwich Living Wage Action Group.

Councillor Alan Waters, Leader of Norwich City Council and Chair of the Action Group and Daniel Childerhouse, CEO of Future Projects also spoke at the campaign launch event at Norwich Forum. They illustrated the value of paying the Real Living Wage for employees, employers, and for the city and wider region as a whole.

After the personal testimonies from employees, Broadland Housing Chief Executive Michael Newey (pictured above, right) joined representatives from Aviva and Norfolk Community Law Service to answer Q&As about the journey to real Living Wage accreditation.

    Martin Miller, 1926-2022

    August 22, 2022

Broadland’s staff and Board are very sad to hear of the passing of Martin Miller.

Martin Miller at The Cedars, 2006
Martin Miller (left) and current Chief Executive Michael Newey at The Cedars, Norwich, in 2006

Martin first came to Broadland in 1968 as its first Chief Executive. Martin played an instrumental role in Broadland’s evolution, its mission and vision, which are still part of our DNA today. Back in the early 1970s, when he was then working with architects, Edward Skipper & Associates, Martin realised the way social housing provision in the UK was changing. Instead of councils supplying most social housing, their role and the funding for new housing was instead being transferred to housing associations.

Martin seized that opportunity by establishing Broadland Housing Association and he worked at Broadland for 23 years, bringing to fruition some of our most popular housing schemes.

Martin oversaw some of the most important changes in our history, from introducing tenant board members onto our Board to building some of our larger housing schemes. He also takes the credit for buying The Cedars, which became a sheltered housing scheme in Norwich. It is still one of our most popular schemes, and Martin even came back in 2006 to help us celebrate its 25th anniversary.

After Martin stepped down from his role as a Chief Executive, he continued to support Broadland as a member. Up until the pandemic he attended the AGM every year, lending us once again his vast experience and knowledge at one of our most important meetings of the year.

Michael Newey, the current Chief Executive of Broadland commented:

Martin’s contribution to the people of Norfolk and to Broadland Housing was massive. As our first Chief Executive, he helped grow Broadland from one scheme in Norwich to over 1,700 affordable rented homes across the county. Martin knew that a home is the foundation of everything else in life and he ensured that Broadland stretched itself to deliver new homes that communities needed. Personally I will miss Martin – his encouragement and his support. His family can be very proud of his contribution to this county and to lives of so many people over the years.

    Michael Newey, Chief Executive

Prior to founding Broadland Housing Association, Martin, who was born in Norwich, spent the first 22 years of his career in the Norwich shoe trade with Norvic Shoe Company, eventually becoming a Board member and heading the design team for both ladies and children’s shoes.

In 1951, Martin married Barbara Barker and in September 2021 they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. A devoted family man, Martin was father to three daughters – Charlotte, Louise and Alexandra, and a very popular “Dumper” to eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

At the age of eight, Martin went to Westminster Cathedral Choir School as a boy chorister, which instilled in Martin a life-long love of music. He put this to good use as a very reliable tenor, singing for many years into his 90s with the Norwich Philharmonic Society Choir. Martin’s other great passion was for sailing. Aged 17, when called up for National Service, Martin applied to join the Royal Navy. However, much to his disappointment, Martin was conscripted down the mines for four years as a ‘Bevan Boy’, near Leeds in Yorkshire. Happily, from the 1960s until his mid-80s, Martin was able to resume his passion for boats and he regularly enjoyed dinghy sailing at Blakeney and on The Broads.

Martin Miller’s funeral will be at St Peter Mancroft at 11.00 on Friday 2nd September. All welcome. Please wear a dash of colour. Family flowers only. Donations to Mancroft Advice Project (MAP) may be sent c/o Allcock Family Funeral Services, Falcon House, 96a City Road, Norwich NR1 2HD or donate online at www.allcockfunerals.co.uk.
